A NEW PUBLICATION

So delighted to know that a book is going to be published at the end of the year archiving all the artists who lived in this studio in Italy that was the hub of Victorian artists. Leonard de Vinci, Wagner, Strauss, Henri James, Baselitz, Cosima Wagner, Bocklin and being the last artist in time who worked in this studio I will join this long chain of artists that will be spoken about in this extraordinary history of a mysterious  deconsecrated monastery where works of art have been born, from the Adoration of the Magi to the Triptych of Secular Transcendence. I asked the scholar this evening under the loggia if she found a link between all these artists through the centuries and she said yes, they all conceived mentally there works here. Like if this place was what I always thought it was, a metaphysical womb calling by some sort of power of geomancy the artists that IT wants. This book on top of being an important historical document will also in my opinion  feature as a subtext the unwritten link between architecture and  mysticism.

I am most delighted to be invited to the Foundation Cini in Venice.  For the third year in a row, as an artist, I will be joining the distinguished Alpine Fellowship.  I am honored and humbled to be part of this cloister of extraordinary minds.To bring back philosophers and artists together is one of the most important task for our civilization today. Philosophy and Art together will remetaphysize art and that is exactly what is needed and it is what I am trying to do in sculpture since 20 years.Did I say art ? THE KNIGHTHOOD OF ROGER SCRUTON

Yesterday Saturday June 11 2016 was a special day for Philosophy and Art. Roger Scruton will be knighted by the Queen of England for her 90th Birthday. I had the privilege to share the same fellowship with Roger and each time it was a delight of elegance and intelligence.

Inside Aldourie Castle in the home of George Watts, the symbolist painter, surrounded by the red tapestries, a fake door hidden behind a painting and an original death mask of William Blake, I remember asking him if he knew why the magnificent poet Holderlin became crazy and he responded as we say in french with fulgurance ''that is what happens to the best of us." It is always an admirable emotion when you hear the answer coming out of the mind of this great man, which you yourself have in your own mind. 

One night we were all sitting in the tea room by the Lochness, all of us sarcophaged in dignity - I remember thinking... there should be a specimen of a spine from the sacrum to the ossified vertebras up to the last vertebras of an Oxford student in a bell jar inside the Museum of Natural History of every country, to show the world what dignification means.

I saw him again a year later at the Foundation Cini as I was presenting my movie on sculpture in which the nucleus of my philosophy was out in the world for the first time.  At night, after the projection of the movie, he broke from the group and kindly found me outside the convent where we were all in black tie waiting for the rivas to take us to dinner on a floating Palazzo to tell me how much he enjoyed the movie. 

He said this with a radiant benevolence. 

Yesterday it is not Roger Scruton who has been knighted, it is Benevolence and Philosophy that has been knighted. Dear Roger you were already a knight...

ESSAY ON TRANSCENDENTAL AESTHETIC

I had the immense pleasure to give a Lecture at the university about the influence of The Divine Comedy of Dante on my sculptures. I was invited by the great Dante scholar Jason Houston who is also a member of the Dante Society of America.In this lecture I discuss how an aesthetic of the 14 century can influence my own aesthetic in the 21 century. A FILM BY DIRK VAN DEN EYNDEN

This is a movie directed by the great cinematographer Dirk Van Den Eynden. Dirk contacted me about 3 years ago saying he wanted to do a movie on me.Dirk has more than 300 movies made in his life on artists . He started in the Seventies and ended up representing his country at the biennale of Venice. His approach of filming an artist is very different from what we usually know about an art film . He revolutionized the biography of the artist . And this is how, he does not interview and he does not film . Ok that might sounds strange to you but he asks the artist to give him hundreds of images, films and texts that are important in the artist life. And from there he starts composing with these images a great biographical symphony. The traditional documentary will ask question to the artist and the artist will answer on a chair sitting in front of his work. Dirk explodes this traditional code and the reason is that we rarely say the truth about ourselves even when we are sincere memory and imagination tend to fuse and give a false idea of our life to us and to the spectator . By making a detour from a direct interview the director arrives directly at the center of the brain of the artist and gives a TRUE picture of the self, not the one that we want to give but the one ( very different ) that IS. Dirk Van Den Eynden realizes through his films the dream of Art which is to merge reality and truth. It has been an honor to be the subject of one of his film and more than this it has been a pleasure to become his friend through the making of that film.To define his work I would happily coin the term of metaphysical biography!

WINNER OF THE SALZBURG SCULPTOR RESIDENCY

I am so honored to have won the Salzburg Sculptor Residency. My new home will be Salzburg where I will sculpt a life size statue of one of my dearest project. I will be sculpting my new project at equidistance from Venise, Munich, Prague, Vienna and Budapest .I can't wait to create a new piece for this residency , this place is one of the most exciting center for sculpture today.
